The Lord is Near to the Brokenhearted

May these passages from Sacred Scripture bring you consolation and hope if you ever find yourself in a place of depression. Cling on to them for they are eternal truths. As well, I have included some powerful wisdom from the Saints of our Christian Faith, a sure light in times of darkness, as their lives radiated the light of Our Savior, Jesus Christ. Indeed, they are the lived interpretation of Sacred Scripture.

Psalm 34:17-19 When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.

Psalm 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your cares on him because he cares for you.

Isaiah 31:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Matthew 11:28 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Psalm 55:22 Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you.

Apocalypse 21:4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.

2 Corinthians 7:6 God comforts the downcast.

John 16:33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.

1 Peter 4:12-13 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

Lamentations 3:22-26 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.

Romans 12:12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.

Psalm 94:19 When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul.

Let nothing perturb you, nothing frighten you. All things pass. God does not change. Patience achieves everything. -St Teresa of Avila

The Cross will not crush you; if its weight makes you stagger, its power will also sustain you. -St Padre Pio

If God causes you to suffer much, it is a sign that He certainly intends to make you a saint. -St Ignatius of Loyola

Lord, help me to live this day, quietly, easily. To lean upon Thy great strength, trustfully, restfully. To wait for the unfolding of Thy will, patiently, serenely. To meet others, peacefully, joyously. To face tomorrow, confidently, courageously. -St Francis of Assisi

Why must we suffer? Because here below pure Love cannot exist without suffering. O Jesus, Jesus, I no longer feel my cross when I think of yours. -St Bernadette

Cling to God, and leave all the rest to Him: He will not let you perish. Your soul is very dear to Him, He wishes to save it. -St Margaret Mary Alacoque

Do not look forward to what may happen tomorrow; the same everlasting Father who cares for you today will take care of you tomorrow and every day. Either He will shield you from suffering, or He will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace, then, put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations, and say continually: 'The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart has trusted in Him and I am helped. He is not only with me but in me and I in Him.' -St Francis de Sales

Without the burden of afflictions it is impossible to reach the height of Grace. The gift of Grace increases as the struggle increases. -St Rose of Lima

Live in faith and hope, though it be in darkness, for in this darkness God protects the soul. Cast your care upon God for you are His and He will not forget you. Do not think that He is leaving you alone, for that would be to wrong Him. -St John of the Cross

Am I not your Mother, who am here with you? -Our Lady of Guadalupe to St. Juan Diego

O Christ Jesus, when all is darkness and we feel our weakness and helplessness, give us the sense of Your presence, Your love, and Your strength. Help us to have perfect trust in Your protecting love and strengthening power, so that nothing may frighten or worry us, for, living close to You, we shall see Your hand, Your purpose, Your will through all things. -Prayer composed by St. Ignatius of Loyola

Stay with me, Lord, for it is necessary to have you present so that I do not forget you. You know how easily I abandon you. Stay with me, Lord, because I am weak, and I need your strength, so that I may not fall so often. Stay with me, Lord, for you are my life, and without you, I am without fervor. Stay with me, Lord, for you are my light, and without you, I am in darkness. Stay with me, Lord, to show me your will. Stay with me, Lord, so that I hear your voice and follow you. Stay with me, Lord, for I desire to love you very much, and always be in your company. Stay with me, Lord, if you wish me to be faithful to you. Stay with me, Lord, for as poor as my soul is, I want it to be a place of consolation for you, a nest of love. Amen. -Prayer composed by St. Padre Pio

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. We love you. Save souls. Amen.
